The Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group is a team of students developing autonomous aerial vehicles that can operate as unmanned aerial vehicles. The goal of the team is to develop autonomous aerial vehicles that perform various tasks without the slightest amount of human interaction. These aircraft must be capable of tasks such as flight stabilization, navigation, and visual recognition. Along with the help of our sponsors WARG is able to foster innovation and push the bounds of what was though not to be possible.
The Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group was founded in the fall of 1997 by a first year computer engineering student named Dave Kroetsch. With the help of Professor David Wang (Electrical and Computer Engineering), a small group of undergraduate computer engineering students officially started to work toward competing in the International Aerial Robotics Competition Millennium Event. Since then WARG has competed in numerous national and international competitions always bringing the most innovative ideas and designs.
WARG has competed in the International Aerial Robotics Competition for many years and has recently decided to enter into the 6th Annual Unmanned Systems Canada Student Unmanned Aerial Systems Competition. WARG will compete against world renowned universities from all across Canada, as soars across the skies and completes its objectives.
WARG is focused on the future and equipping its members with the knowledge and know how to succeed not just as a team but as individuals as well. It is a place that students can come to learn and get experience, as well as a place for students to hone and expand their skills and understanding. Take a look at all that WARG has to offer on our join page.
The Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group (WARG) is a team of UW students that is attempting to win the Unmanned Systems Canada Competition. This competition requires the autonomous aerial vehicle to patrol a pipeline right of way and its surrounding area, identifying and mapping damaged crop, locating a rockslide and calculating its volume, and identifying unauthorized people or vehicles in the pipeline right of way. This surveillance is very difficult to achieve, but with the talent and creativity of WARG’s team members we are able to successfully complete this task. We believe that UW has the best students in the world. This competition is a chance to prove it!
Problem-solving, technical skills, and so much more. As a multi-faceted team, we have space for students of any program or faculty. If you are interested in learning about vision systems, control systems, mechanical design, systems integration, real-time software or artificial intelligence then WARG is where you belong. All of us started out not knowing much on these subjects but through work with the team we have gained experience and knowledge, and you can too. WARG also has need for people with business and marketing backgrounds to target sponsors and complete outreach.
The benefits to becoming a WARG member are plentiful. Other than gaining the respect and admiration of your family and friends, you will meet some hard-working individuals who like robots and have fun. You will gain some incredible experience to dazzle employers, make connections for some cool jobs, have access to the E5 Student Design Center and all the Team work rooms. Most importantly you will have the opportunity to lay your hands on the coolest pieces of technology on campus!
All of the members of WARG are students too. Our involvement in this project is an extracurricular activity. If you want to spend 30 hours a week working on our competition entry, then there is enough work for you. If you only want to spend 5 hours a week, that’s okay too. However, we have to warn you that playing with robots is a dangerous addiction. You will enjoy your WARG experience so much that you will find ways to spend more time with us.
The members of the WARG team do. The advisory board is a group of WARG members who have dedicated their time and efforts to winning the competition. Board members have a little extra responsibility. They have to handle the finances and accounts, run the meetings, help out new members, and decide on the team direction.
So, if you want to get more involved you can!
Perhaps the best way to get involved with WARG is to come out to the WARG bay in the E5 Student Design center and meet with the team. You will be able to meet some of the WARG members and to find out more about what is currently going on in WARG. Meeting dates and other events are posted on our news page so you can see when we will be around. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Have you ever built an autonomous robotic flying vehicle? If you have, then we could use your help. If you haven’t, don’t worry because we still want your help. Whether you are an accomplished QNX software developer, an aerospace engineering freak or a frosh who wants to play with robots, we have a learning opportunity for you. Join our mailing list and get updated with what WARG is up to and get informed about meeting dates and times. Just fill out this form.
We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to all our sponsors for their contributions. WARG cannot operate without their generous support. Thank you.The Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group would not exist and could not operate were it not for the assistance provided from our many sponsors. If you own or represent a company or organization then we encourage you to consider sponsoring our exciting entry into the Aerial Robotics Competition. The Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group can stand to benefit from your financial assistance, technology and expertise. WARG requires funding to effectively equip our team of autonomous aerial and ground vehicles and to purchase necessary lab equipment. Your financial donations help us to compete against other internationally acclaimed schools such as University of Toronto, University of British Columbia and Carlton. A lot of the equipment we are using for our team of robots has been graciously donated or loaned to us from our sponsors in industry. This is a great way to gain applied exposure for your technology. If you think that you have some technology that can assist our efforts then please contact us. Some of our sponsors have helped by providing us with supervised access to their facilities to complete electronic circuit fabrication. Other sponsors have assisted us with difficult shipping arrangements and packaging. Lending us your time, expertise or resources is another way in which you can sponsor WARG. It is powered by a high-performance STM32F7 ARM processor running at 216 MHz, and features two isolated on-board power supplies, 12 PWM outputs, and a seperate safety controller that supports direct manual takeover of the aircraft systems. Like the PICPilot, it has been designed for both fixed-wind and multirotor aircraft, and is easily adapted to control other, more esoteric systems.
